Happy birthday Mahesh Bhatt

Love him or hate him, you can’t ignore him. A film personality almost always in the news for some controversial quote or some shocking revelation about his own life.

As a film maker, he may be more remembered for quantity rather than quality. Yet, he is a story teller who was not afraid of telling stories of his own life..His autobiographical movies like Arth, Janam, Zakhm, Najaayaz, Daddy touched people’s hearts , even though they were not big hits. Anyone who has seen Saaransh would remember it.

His commercial hits were Aashiqui, Naam, Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin , Hum hain raahi pyar ke. etc. Often candyfloss love stories made on thin budgets with borrowed or oft-repeated stories but great music.

It’s a rare Mahesh Bhatt film that did not have good music.

In the 1990s, there were movies of Mahesh Bhatt getting released every month. The rumours were he used to direct movies on the phone.

The Bhatt banner, Vishesh Films, managed by his brother Mukesh had evolved a formula of sorts . Low budget films with new stars, a few titillating scenes, some emotional scenes and lovely music often plagiarised from Pak or other countries. A B- Grade film, in short. These worked for sometime. Once they started losing money they quietly reduced their productions.

To give Mahesh his due, he realised he was burnt out and gave up direction at the right time. He just produced films, occasionally wrote the script and mentored several young directors.

I would imagine also that he would have groomed and coached his daughter Alia and nephew Emran Hashmi. Alia has turned out to be a fine actor and also a star.

I wonder how history will remember him.

A sensitive film maker. A filmmaker of bohemian ways. . An activist/ artist who worked towards Indo-Pak and Hindu Muslim unity. A successful Gujarati businessman who incidentally made money by directing and producing films. Or just as Alia’s father.

Here are a selection of some of the good songs from Mahesh Bhatt films:

1. Jhuki jhuki si nazar from Arth

2. Saanson ki zarrorat ho jaise from Aashiqui

3. Ghoonghat ki aad se dilbar ka from Hum hain rahi pyar ke

4. Jab koi baat bigad jaaye from Jurm

5. Aaina mujhse meri pehli si surat maangi…from Daddy

6. Tum aaye to mujhe yaad to gali mein aaj chand niklega
